That Tender Night

That tender night I fell for such and such,

for every face that glittered in the rain,

till all the bar lights blurred, and one small touch

undid me, and I fell in love with Shane.

But Ryan was to blame, I swear it’s true:

he slipped inside me, slow as amber wine,

and curled up small, the way that sleepers do,

and made his bed along my trembling spine.

He filled each hollow where my doubts had grown,

he stretched through every corner of my chest,

so when my shame came knocking, cold as stone,

it found no door, no chair, no place to rest.

No room was left for shame, not even a drop;

my cup ran over, and I did not stop.
